Finding Grace in the Silence

Finding Grace in the Silence
Grief is not a destination. It is a drive—one that feels, on many days, like you are navigating a dirt road through a sandstorm. When I lost my father, I lost more than just a parent; I lost my teacher, my hero, and the person who showed me what God’s love looked like in real life.
In the aftermath of that loss, I found myself in a world that seemed determined to rush the healing process. I was told to “grow up” and “get over it,” as if grief were an inconvenience to be tidied away. But when you are living with a disability like cerebral palsy, your daily life is already filled with challenges that require immense patience and persistence. When you add the weight of profound loss to that, the world’s demand to “just be happy” feels impossible.
I wrote my memoir, The Drive Through Grief With Me, because I realized that the community often lacks the tools to sit in the pain with the hurting. We are quick to offer platitudes, but slow to offer the simple, holy act of presence.
I’ve learned that there is a difference between “understanding” and being there. True grace is not about fixing someone’s sorrow or demanding they smile through the tears. It is about being willing to drink out of the same cup you pour into and having the courage to stay when the silence gets heavy.
If you are currently walking through your own valley of grief, I want you to know: you do not have to “get over it.” You are allowed to be honest with God. You are allowed to wrestle with Him until you find your blessing.
My journey is not about pretending the pain is gone; it is about choosing to be honest, to reflect, and to keep driving forward with the hope that love never truly dies.
