Inspirational Quote 3.19.15 Loss of a Child

Over the last few weeks we’ve been presenting inspirational songs about grieving. We dealt with loss of a loved one, grieving from the point of view of the dying, and supporting a friend during their bereavement. You can find them through this liink:

This week we are dealing with the hardest death of all, the untimely loss of a child. Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven” is a modern classic. Below the lyrics are two youtubes: the first is the song itself performed by Clapton to a montage of photos of his son. The second is an interview with him about the day Conor Clapton fell out of a window to his death.

I saw Clapton perform with his band, Cream,  in, of all places, the Hunter College auditorium on March 29, 1968. He was, and still is, the greatest guitar player of his generation. He had a strange childhood, raised by parents who were actually his grandparents, and a sister who was in reality his mother. Conor’s presence in his life transformed Clapton, giving him a reason to deal with his addictions. The loss of a child changed his life and his music profoundly.

“Tears In Heaven”

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strongeric and connor clapton
And carry on,
‘Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

I’ll find my way
Through night and day,
‘Cause I know I just can’t stay
Here in heaven.

Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.

Beyond the door,
There’s peace I’m sure,
And I know there’ll be no more
Tears in heaven.

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
‘Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven.

Eric Clapton
